Born and brought up in a zamindar family in Bihar, she developed an interest in acting and writing at an early age and participated in stage performances, singing and cultural programmes. Her poetry was also published in Hindi newspapers and magazines. After completing her graduation in Bihar, Verma moved to Pune and continued her artistic activities before eventually moving to Mumbai with the ambition of becoming a lyricist. Her meeting with filmmaker Prakash Mehra became an important turning point in her career. Mehra introduced her as an actress in Dalal, in which she appeared in a cameo role. She subsequently established herself as a character artist in Hindi cinema, appearing in films including Dharam Sankat, Heer Ranjha, Kismat, Bal Brahmachari, Aag, Hero No. 1, Wajood and Haseena Maan Jayegi. Her work across acting and literature has allowed her to combine her artistic and writing abilities throughout her career. Her association with filmmaker Ramanand Sagar also played an important role in expanding her career into Bhojpuri cinema.
